Meet Kamila
Kamila Hines Muhammad appeared on Show 238, recorded in July 2011, at age 17.
Kamila has been playing clarinet since she was 9 years old and attends Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago for academic studies and Merit School of Music’s Tuition-free Conservatory for music. At Merit, she studies clarinet with Bonnie-Heather Campbell. Kamila is the principal clarinetist of the Merit Symphony Orchestra, Merit Wind Symphony, and is the clarinetist of the chamber group Septacular. Kamila is also heavily involved with performing arts programs at her high school. In addition to her studies in classical music, Kamila plays tenor saxophone and studies jazz at Merit with Michael McLaughlin and through the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at Gallery 37 with Jarrard Harris. Her most precious musical memory was performing Cantaloupe Island with the piece’s esteemed composer, Herbie Hancock. Outside of music, Kamila loves writing, cooking, and spending time with friends.

Septacular is an Illinois-based septet from the Merit School of Music. It is coached by Bryan Polacek, and the Artistic Director is Timothy Riordan. The septet is comprised of 17-year-old violinist Julia Ghica from Chicago; 17-year-old clarinetist and Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Kamila Hines Muhammad from Chicago; 17-year-old bassoonist Abigail Arnold from Elmhurst; 17-year-old trumpet player Joel Cantoran from Westmont; 16-year-old trombonist Jacob Mezera from Tinley Park; 18-year-old double bassist Daniela Gazibara from Crown Point; and 18-year-old percussionist Yael Litwin from Chicago.
