Three From the Top Alums are Sphinx Competition Semi-Finalists!
The semi-finalists for the 14th annual Sphinx Competition have been announced, and among them are several From the Top alums!
The Sphinx Organization is a non profit that works to “overcome the cultural stereotype of classical music, and to encourage the participation of Blacks and Latinos in the field.”
Each year their competition gives diverse youth a chance to win scholarships, cash prizes, and opportunities to perform with major orchestras around the country. The participants, aged 13 to 24, are divided into a junior or senior division based on age. One of the prizes for the junior division is an appearance on From the Top!
This year three of our alums made it to the semi-finals, which begins on February 2, 2011 in Michigan:
- Violinist Brendon Elliott, Show 178 Newport News, VA
- Double bassist Xavier Foley, Show 203 Atlanta, GA
- Violinist Alexandra Switala, Show 140 Richardson, TX
