Meet Emily

Emily performs on Show 407 and on Show 421

Emily Hwang (viola), 16, hails from Palo Alto, California, and is a junior at Henry M. Gunn High School. She studies viola at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Division with Dimitri Murrath. In 2019, she won the California division of the MTNA Competition and was the alternate winner for the MTNA National Competition Southwest division in 2020. She won second place at the Houston International Music Competition and the ENKOR International Strings Competition, and first place at the International Grande Music Competition as part of the Bravi String Quartet. Emily has performed as a soloist with the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and the California Youth Symphony. In addition, Emily is a member of the Bach to Bach Project, which introduces classical music to young children, and the Bridges in Music Program, which brings music to senior homes. She has also participated in the Nahnoom Benefit Concerts for disaster relief, the Music@Menlo Festival, and the Morningside Music Bridge Festival. Outside of music, Emily enjoys writing and ballet.
