Elisa Kain Johnson (composer), 18, hails from Seattle, Washington. A singer-songwriter and pianist in addition to being a composer, Elisa’s music often explores elements of social justice and identity. She studies classical and jazz piano, musical theater, voice, and has also studied the Chinese instrument erhu. Her music has been performed by several student and professional performers, including the Northwest Girlchoir, the New England Music Camp Chamber Choir and Chorale, the Overlake School Chamber and Concert Choirs, members of the Seattle Symphony, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble. In 2021, she was selected as one of six national fellows by the New York City based Luna Composition Lab run by Missy Mazzoli and Ellen Reid. She has been honored to receive awards and honorable mentions from the American Prize, the Washington State Music Teachers Association, the National Federation of Music Clubs, and The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York. She has studied with Spencer Arias and currently studies with Angelique Poteat. Outside of music, Elisa enjoys theater, dance, Ultimate Frisbee, and cooking/baking.
