On the Road with Joanne Robinson: Show #237 Katonah

Last weekend we were in the town of Katonah, New York taping an episode of the radio show at the most beautiful venue – the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts located on a Mediterranean-inspired estate surrounded by gardens. It was a gorgeous day, and our show took place in the outdoor Venetian Theater.

The performers were phenomenal and really came alive when the show started. First up was 10-year-old cellist Sujari Britt who played Saint-Saëns with maturity far exceeding her young age. Next up was “Harry Potter look-a-like” Eric Segerstrom who played from Concerto for Marimba & String Orchestra by Eric Ewazen. Also an accomplished composer, he was joined onstage by composer Eric Ewazen, who has been his mentor. Next up was flutist Jacquelyn Nakamura, who played Duo for Flute and Piano by Aaron Copland with an enormous amount of expression and joy. We had some fun with the fact that she’s visited Disney World twelve times and gave her a Disney trivia quiz, which of course she passed with flying colors! Taking the stage next, the Malik String Quartet passionately performed the Finale of Dvorak’s “American” Quartet, and closing the show, 15-year-old pianist extraordinaire Kyung-A Lee played Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13.
