Meet Zaylyn

Zaylyn Ray Bain (percussion), 17, was raised in a small rural community in De Leon, Texas. As a young classical percussionist, his musical journey has been fueled by a deep desire to honor his late father and uncle. Zaylyn’s passion for music has not only been a form of personal expression but also a pathway to achieve his dreams and share them with others. He has had the opportunity to perform in a wide variety of ensembles, including the Granbury Community Band, the Cross Timbers Tuba & Euphonium Ensemble, and as a long-time member of the Mighty Maroon Band – seven years and counting. Throughout his time at De Leon Middle and High Schools, Zaylyn has earned numerous accolades. For all four years of high school, Zaylyn has earned spots in the Region Honor Band and Area Band. In addition, Zaylyn has received superior ratings at both Regional and State Solo and Ensemble competitions. He was selected to perform at PASIC 2023 (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) and was a Nelda Hodges Young Artist Competition Finalist.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Zaylyn participates in a wide range of student groups and extracurricular activities, including Gifted and Talented (GT), Esports, Debate, Musical Theater, and One Act Play, where he has advanced to regionals for two consecutive years and received multiple awards as an actor and technician. He also serves as the president of the STEM club and participates in National Honor Society, Student Council, Student Health Advisory Council, CTE Advisory Committee, First National Junior Bank Board, Varsity Marching and Concert Band, Upward Bound, and UIL Academic competitions in which he has also advanced to regionals for two consecutive years.

Outside of school, Zaylyn is a committed member of the music ministry at his church. He also enjoys competitive bowling with his band directors and playing tabletop games with his friends.

Receiving the Award will allow Zaylyn to purchase many of the percussion instruments and accessories needed to support him through his college years and beyond. The funds will also cover college audition travel needs, allowing him to further pursue his music education at the university level.
