Meet Joseph

Joey Karz (composer), 18, is a recent graduate of Brentwood School in Los Angeles, and a 2021 YoungArts Finalist for Classical Music Composition.  Joey was a fellow in the LA Philharmonic Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program from 2018-2021, where he studied under Andrew Norman, Sarah Gibson, and Thomas Kotcheff.  In addition to the CFP, Joey studied piano and composition at the Colburn School throughout high school.  During the summer of 2021, his original piece premiered at the Sunset Chamber Festival in Los Angeles.  Going into his junior year, Joey studied composition at Boston University Tanglewood Institute, where he composed for various ensembles and had his music performed by students and professionals.  Prior to Tanglewood, Joey attended Interlochen Arts Camp for two summers, studying piano and composing his first original work. Outside of music, he loves to watch movies and play sports, especially football and basketball.  Joey is beginning his freshman year at the University of Michigan, where he will study music composition in the School of Theater, Music and Dance.  To hear more of Joey’s music, go to joeykarz.com.
