Devin Spaulding, bass trombone
Meet Devin
Devin Spaulding (bass trombone), 17, is from Tomball, Texas. Currently a senior studying at Interlochen Arts Academy, Devin began playing the trombone in sixth grade and quickly became passionate about music. A breakthrough came when he was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Luzerne Music Festival in Lake Luzerne, New York. He was surrounded by other motivated and inspiring young musicians and felt pushed to raise his standards. He competed in the concerto competition that summer and was selected to play for the solo showcase. After his return home to Texas, he won first chair bass trombone in the TMEA Region 9 Wind Symphony and earned a spot in the Region 9 Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his move to the Interlochen Arts Academy, Devin is also proud to have served as drum major for the Tomball High School Marching Band.
Growing up, the financial demands of music training were a significant challenge and barrier for his family. When he was accepted to Interlochen, Devin started a GoFundMe campaign and worked a summer job to be able to start his first semester. Receiving the Award will support Devin’s music education by allowing him to continue his studies at Interlochen Arts Academy and cover his upcoming college audition travel costs. The Award funds will also support the purchase of a bass trombone that will carry him through college and into the professional field.
