Alex Davis, banjo

Hometown: Madison, Alabama

Meet Alex

Alex performs on Show 478.

Alex Davis (banjo), 13, from Madison, Alabama, started playing banjo at the age of 8. Just after turning 9, he met a nationally recognized musician/instructor at a banjo workshop who offered to teach him. This instructor had been in the band of a significant music star and is the only five-time national banjo champion. Under his tutelage, Alex’s rate of learning was meteoric.

Alex’s first significant performance was on Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour when he was 9. There he met the members of bluegrass band who asked him to play onstage with them at The Station Inn in Nashville, a venue that could be considered to be the center of the bluegrass music world. Since then, he has performed with several other bands and venues. He also competed at bluegrass contests. Significant wins include Tennessee State, Georgia State Fiddlers Convention, and Alabama State. He was also selected as an IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Kid on Bluegrass to perform at the World of Bluegrass convention.

Alex continues to learn technique and music theory from a nationally recognized musician and Berklee College of Music alumnus. Since bluegrass music is so reliant on improvisation, a deep learning of music theory is important to being a complete bluegrass musician.
