Lauren Kim (piano), 17, is a junior at Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago, Illinois. She studies solo piano with Elaine Felder at the Music Institute of Chicago, and has been playing for nearly 14 years. There is nothing she enjoys more than serving her community through music, and frequently performs at nursing homes, takes part in music therapy, and gives complimentary lessons to elementary students as a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society. Lauren is a recipient of From the Top’s Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award, as well as many merit-based scholarships from the Music Institute of Chicago.A huge part of Lauren’s musical studies has been her experiences with her piano duo of 4 years, dubbed Duo Appassionato. The duo is coached by Claire Aebersold and Ralph Neiweem, and has participated in many duo piano festivals and camps, been coached in numerous master classes, been interviewed for and broadcasted on Chicago’s WFMT 98.7 FM classical radio, and is excited to be hosting a benefit concert for the neurology department of Lurie Children’s Hospital later in Spring 2018. Duo Appassionato was awarded 1st Prize in the senior division of the 2017 National Youth Duo Piano Competition at Chicago, and also competed at the MTNA national finals in Spring 2018 at Orlando, FL. In Lauren’s free time, she loves learning chemistry, designing bioengineering experiments, watching TED Talks, reading fantasy novels, fundraising for developing countries, golfing, traveling, playing the violin with her school orchestra, hanging out with friends, and fangirling over the Chicago Cubs.
Lauren performs on From the Top with Colin Song. Their duo is coached by Claire Aebersold and Ralph Neiweem and they were first prize winners of the 2017 Chicago National Youth Competitions for Piano Duos.
