Welcome, National Flute Association Fans!
Hello there, and welcome to From the Top’s website! Let us just say that we are very excited to be partnering with the National Flute Association, and to all of you who are competing in their competition this year – best of luck!
In case we haven’t met yet, let us catch you up on all we do.
Founded in Boston in 1995 by Gerald Slavet and Jennifer Hurley-Wales, From the Top originated as a variety-style radio show. More than 20 years later, From the Top has grown into a multi-media and arts education powerhouse, transforming the lives of hundreds of young musicians each year, inspiring millions of fans, and pioneering new ways to unite communities around the promise of great young talent.
From the Top’s signature media program, From the Top with Host Christopher O’Riley, is the most popular weekly one-hour classical music program on public radio, heard by nearly half a million listeners on more than 200 stations nationwide.

Each year, From the Top showcases over 250 young musicians through our radio show, video projects, and other special events. Our classically-trained performers, ages 8–18, represent nearly every state in America, and a variety of different instruments.
Are you a young musician, ready to have the time of your life? Apply for From the Top today!
We believe that financial need should never hold a young musician back. So, together with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, each year we select approximately 20 exceptional pre-collegiate musicians, ages 8-18, to receive up to $10,000 in financial support. Young Artist Award winners are also given the opportunity to perform on NPR’s From the Top with Host Christopher O’Riley. Click Here to apply.
Every musician who appears on the show also receives leadership and outreach training, learning how to take music beyond the concert hall. Our Center for the Development of Arts Leaders in Boston gives students a wide range of opportunities to use the transformative power of music to engage new audiences, give back to their community, and explore their individual leadership pathways.
