Andrew Downs (double bass), 17, is from Birmingham, Alabama, where he attends the Alabama School of Fine Arts where he participates in choir, orchestra, and string ensembles. He studies with Richard Cassarino. He toured with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States in 2013. He placed fourth in the 2014 Blount-Slawson Competition in Montgomery and spent the summer at Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He will receive From the Top’s Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award in conjunction with his appearance on the radio show. Outside of music, he enjoys baking cakes and cookies.
