Marcelina Suchocka Helps Chicago’s Youth Discover their Artistic Side
Marcelina demonstrated a number of percussion instruments, and provided hands-on activities for the students ranging from the second to eighth grade.
What: Daylong percussion workshop with hands-on activities for students of the Stowe Fine Arts & Performing Arts Academy in Humboldt Park, Chicago.
When: February 2011
How: Marcelina’s mother, the music teacher at the Academy, recommended Marcelina host a percussion workshop with her students for one whole day. The students ranged from second to eighth grade. With the help of the school, the Chicago Youth Symphony Percussion Scholarship Group and From the Top, Marcelina was able to gather the instruments/materials needed and build a suitable program for the workshop.
“I (wanted) to let the children know that whatever they choose to do, they should strive to be the best at it. It doesn’t have to be music, but they should love what they do and strive to be better and better at it every day. I also (wanted) to teach the children about percussion instruments…and about the orchestra."
