CDAL Boston: Orientation & Key Dates

"There is no other program like this. It gives you the tools to do something really special in the community." – Madeline Bauer, Class of 2011 Arts Leader

The program officially begins with a 2-day orientation for all incoming arts leaders. During this fun, interactive, and music-filled weekend, you will get to know the full CDAL Boston community (arts leaders, partners, staff), learn more about the program, and start to explore the essential questions that will guide your work this year. Team and partner site placements will be revealed during the orientation. You will leave feeling energized, inspired, and ready for the year!

See below for more information on the time commitment and calendar for the year.

The program runs from late August 2012 through June 2013. There is a time commitment of roughly 20 hours a month for each arts leader, which includes time spent at the community partner site, regular team communication (in-person and online), independent work, full group events and travel time. The amount of work will fluctuate throughout the year: some months will include full group meetings; other months it will be primarily independent and team-based work. See below for more information.

Community Partner Site Work & Team Communication

Each team will create a calendar of on-site work and team meetings, taking into account individual schedules and the needs of the site. Teams will be expected to maintain weekly online communication and monthly in-person meetings to plan and implement their projects, and will be supported by staff in this effort. Arts leaders will find out their team and partner site placement during the orientation and will leave with an initial calendar of on-site work and a team communication plan for September.

Full Group Meetings: City Year Headquarters, 287 Columbus Avenue, Boston from 4:00 – 8:00 PM.

These are required events that bring the full group together to share their learning and explore key leadership topics. Arts leaders are allowed one excused absence over the course of the year.

"It’s really fun. You are going to feel like you changed people’s lives, which I think is the greatest feeling there is and you are going to develop relationships with people that are going to last even after the project is over." – Anna Deloi, Class of 2011 Arts Leader
